Pseudo-Query Reformulation

چکیده

Automatic query reformulation refers to rewriting a user’s original query in order to improve the ranking of retrieval results compared to the original query. We present a general framework for automatic query reformulation based on discrete optimization. Our approach, referred to as pseudoquery reformulation, treats automatic query reformulation as a search problem over the graph of unweighted queries linked by minimal transformations (e.g. term additions, deletions). This framework allows us to test existing performance prediction methods as heuristics for the graph search process. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach on several publicly available datasets.

Analysis of users’ query reformulation behavior in Web with regard to Wholis-tic/analytic cognitive styles, Web experience, and search task type

Background and Aim: The basic aim of the present study is to investigate users’ query reformulation behavior with regard to wholistic-analytic cognitive styles, search task type, and experience variables in using the Web. Method: This study is an applied research using survey method. A total of 321 search queries were submitted by 44 users. Data collection tools were Riding’s Cognitive Style A...

Concept Based vs. Pseudo Relevance Feedback Performance Evaluation for Information Retrieval System

This article evaluates the performance of two techniques for query reformulation in a system for information retrieval, namely, the concept based and the pseudo relevance feedback reformulation. The experiments performed on a corpus of Arabic text have allowed us to compare the contribution of these two reformulation techniques in improving the performance of an information retrieval system for...

La reformulation hybride des requêtes exploratoires à l'aide de concepts explicites et implicites

Explorative web queries are often short and ambiguous. In addition, using named entities in this type of queries is well-known and frequent. In this paper, we explore query reformulation for adding terms belonging to query concepts. We distinguish two types of concepts: explicits ones that correspond to named entities having references to concepts in the Yago ontology, and implicit ones that we...

Patterns and Sequences of Multiple Query Reformulations in Web Searching: A Preliminary Study

While some studies have investigated query reformulation in traditional online systems, there has been little understanding of how users reformulate their queries multiple times within search sessions on the Web. This paper reports on patterns and sequences of query reformulation based on query logs from a Web search engine. The data set contained only search sessions in which multiple query mo...
